UNCG Gerontology Program

School of Health and Human Sciences

The UNCG Gerontology Program is pleased to offer a 12-credit hour undergraduate minor in gerontology!

The undergraduate minor in gerontology attracts undergraduates at UNCG with any major, interested in a career in aging or personally interested in the topic. This minor is of special interest to undergraduates planning to pursue careers in the allied health fields, with businesses or non-profits providing services or products to older adults and their families, or after attending graduate school as researchers in their respective fields.

Students will learn to:

  • locate information relevant to the aging experience and communicate it effectively to others,
  • describe the variety of aging experiences,
  • analyze current opportunities and constraints on how people age,
  • interpret data and apply theories of aging to gain perspective on their own futures as older adults and to identify areas for changes.

Working with the UNCG Gerontology Undergraduate Coordinator and their own major advisor, students will have an opportunity to complete a program of study customized to help them meet their own personal or career goals.  The minor consists of four 3-credit hour courses, one of which is required and all of which must be outside of the student’s major.

GRO 201:  Envisioning Your Old Age.
This is the one required course.  In this course, students learn to think critically about aging in the current U.S. context and develop proposals for change to ensure their ideal old age will be possible.

Elective courses (9 credit hours) Can be chosen from the following list or from other courses with a focus on aging under advisement of the Gerontology Undergraduate Coordinator.
